Game 13 - Leafs 4, Edmonton 0 - Kessel and Reimer the stars in comfy Leafs win

In their first game with Edmonton, the Leafs were constantly pushed, coming from beind late in the third period to grab an OT victory. This time, there was no such drama, as Toronto opened the scoring in the second minute of the game, and were up 3-0 at the halfway point. In the last ten minutes, the only drama was whether James Reimer would hold onto his shutout, which he did.

Toronto weren't great in the opening frame, but a strong second, featuring two goals and a 7-4 edge in chances saw them pull ahead. They were broadly outchanced in the third period, but almost all of Edmonton's chances came after Kadri scored the 4th goal, meaning that the edge in puck possession and chances was in a large part due to score effects.

The Extra Skater game profile.

Edmonton dominated Corsi, 76-48 overall, 65-41 5-on-5, and 22-16 in 5-on-5 Corsi close.

Some notes:

1st - 18:52 - The Leafs open the scoring 68 seconds in, a pinch from Belov that missed the puck catching Edmonton off guard, leaving Kessel alone in the centre of the ice. Kadri managed to push past Schultz, getting a pass to the wide open forward. Kessel was in tight, but made a great move to get it past Bachman.
1st - 3:48 - Franson, put under pressure by Nugent-Hopkins, coughs the puck up in the corner. Nugent-Hopkins then centres to Hemsky, alone in front, but Reimer makes a good save in close.
1st - 0:53 - A late shorthanded chance for Edmonton. The puck is chipped past Raymond and Rielly at the line, and with Gardiner on the far side, Yakupov is able to chase the puck down and throw it in front. Rielly has his man tied up, but Nick Schultz jumps in and is free as the third man, putting a good shot on that Reimer stops.

2nd - 19:04 - Bolland sifts into the zone, and Raymond manages to go through the two defenseman in front, getting a small gap on Smid, who can't tie his stick up. Bolland finds Raymond with a pass, and Bachman gets over for the save.
2nd - 18:19 - Kessel doesn't stay with Schultz, who drives down the middle and takes a good pass from Gagner after Edmonton enters the zone. After Bernier stops it, though, the puck goes out into the neutral zone for a speeding Kessel. Schultz is now caught, leaving Kessel and JVR 2-on-1 with Belov. Kessel finds Van Riemsdyk with the pass, and makes it 2-0. Gagner's backchecking leaves a lot to be desired here, just cruises after JVR in the slot, rather than giving it his all to try and get close and tie up his stick.
2nd - 11:18 - Almost not a chance, as it's a very tight angle, but Kessel manages to put it anyway, as the puck goes off the end boards right to him. There's not much the defense can do, as you can't defend a shot from that angle all that well, though no one was really too close to Kessel.

3rd - 18:34 - Ranger gets embarrased by Eberle, who is in close attention when Gagner gets the puck to him in the slot, only to have Eberle use some great hands to stickhandle through his legs and get free right in front. Reimer is there again with an excellent save.
3rd - 15:16 - With Edmonton pushing for a goal to get back in it, Van Riemsdyk and Kessel got free on a 2-on-1, with Belov defending. Kessel mishandles the puck slightly, but recovers to throw a pass around Belov to the open JVR, who can't tip it past Bachman.
3rd - 13:46 - Temporarily Morgan Rielly's first NHL goal, though it ended up going off of Kadri. A terrible giveaway from Petry, who just throws it up the middle, right to JVR. He finds Kessel down low, and while Smid goes down to try and block the pass across Kessel goes back to a jumping-in Rielly, who fires a good shot on, with it brushing of Kadri on the way in.
3rd - 7:31 - A pass to Belov at the point goes off Ashton's skate, and ends up going to Belov, but up in the slot. Lupul 's attempt to go after the puck misses, and Belov cuts right across the slot. He doesn't get much on the shot, but Jones maanges a whack at a rebound that Reimer stops.

As befits his 4 point game, Kessel was a solid +1, on for six chances for. He was bested by his new linemate Kadri, who had the team's best offensive performance, on for 7 ES chances. Lupul, Ashton and McClement, kind of a makeshift line thrown together with some injuries, was badly outchanced, and were the weakest on the team.

Phaneuf had another good game, playing in his home town. his +2 was rhe only positive on the Leafs' defence, and on for just three chances against was one of the best marks for players who got substantial minutes. Franson and Rielly struggled again, with Franson a team worst -5. This partnership has been consistently outchanced all year, and with Fraser close to returning, it'll be interesting to see whether they stay together.

A great game from Hemsky, Jones and Nugent-Hopkins, all at least +6, and on for just four chances against combined. Eberle, Yakupov and Gagner were all on for a lot of chances for, but also against, as with Eberle facing a game high eight against.

Players with nice chance numbers:
Toronto - Dion Phaneuf, Nazem Kadri
Edmonton - Ryan Jones, Ales Hemsky, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins

Players with poor chance numbers:
Toronto - Cody Franson, Joffrey Lupul, Jay McClement
Edmonton - Mark Arcobello, Boyd Gordon
