Game 1 - Oct 1st @ Montreal - Leafs 4, Montreal 3

An entertaining game to start the new season; the Leafs got the opening goal through James Van Riemsdyk, but trailed at the end of the first. They came back to take the lead in the second, Tyler Bozak scoring a short handed goal, then added an insurance marker in the third, one which they'd need after a late Lars Eller goal.

The game was marred by George Parros' injury, hitting his head on the ice during his second fight of the game with Colton Orr, a bizzare reprisal of a similar incident between the two from 2011, with Orr the one left struggling on the ice in that case.

Montreal came out of the gate flying, but the Leafs gradually got back even, partly thanks to a number of powerplays. That the Leafs survived the first period is a real testament to James Reimer, as they were outchanced 11-1 in the second half of the frame,  including three chances on a spectacular late shift by Eller, Moen and Parros. The Leafs managed to get things on track later in the game, however, allowing just 5 chances in the last 30 minutes. While Montreal pressed hard in the last couple of minutes after Eller's goal, I only saw one shot that made it through to Reimer, a fairly weak one from Subban at the boards. It almost went in anyway, with Reimer down and out, but I didn't count it. Other than that, the shots the Habs attempted were blocked or deflected by the Leafs' defenders.

Interestingly, despite there being a bit of a feeling after the Parros injury that the Canadiens had the energy sucked out of them, an argument furthered by Raymond's goal, it was actually Montreal which had the chances closest to the fight, Pacioretty coming close to an equalizer twice.

The Extra Skater game profile gives Montreal's Corsi lead as 70-61 overall, and their 5-on-5 Corsi as 55-38.

This means Toronto generated 41% of the game's shooting events at 5-on-5, and 47% overall. This fits roughly with the scoring chance numbers, where the Leafs had 36% of the game's chances at 5-on-5 and 48% overall.

I had to go back and double check Kulemin and Lupul, as I didn't buy that they had so few chances when they were on the ice even strength. Part of it is that both guys saw their even strength time go way up in the third, with the Leafs defending a lead, and when there were not many chances generated by the Canadiens. Still, that line will need to be able to generate some more chances to provide secondary scoring.

Kessel, JVR and Bozak were in trouble at even strength, but a great powerplay late in the third got them to respectability in the overall numbers. Troy Bodie had a very solid game, on the ice for four chances, tied with the likes of Kessel and JVR at even strength. Bolland was relatively quiet but had good scoring chance and Corsi numbers.

On the defensive end,  Cody Franson had a strong game after a short training camp, earning him a lot of even strength ice time, and Gunnarson was quietly effective. He was away from Phaneuf for much of the latter's chances against, which were myriad, but the troublesome spot on the blue line was Gardiner, who was really caught out, particularly against the Plekanec line.

Subban 10 5 5 18:49
Markov 7 1 6 14:19
Eller 7 3 4 13:01

Eller was very good, but so were Subban and Markov, though the Russian did get badly beat by Bozak for the 3-2 goal while on the powerplay. Diaz could have been even better, he fanned on a great chance late in the second, and didn't get much strength on his second attempt. Parros' 4 chances in 4 minutes primarily came from his one shift with Eller when the Dane was buzzing in the Leafs' zone. Desharnais wasn't on for a goal, but was effective at being there for chances.

Players with nice chance numbers:
Toronto - Cody Franson, Carl Gunnarson, Dave Bolland
Montreal - Lars Eller, P.K. Subban, Travis Moen

Players with poor chance numbers:
Toronto - Jake Gardiner, Jay McClement, Mark Fraser
Montreal - Jarred Tinordi, Tomas Plekanec
