Game 12 - Leafs 4, Pittsburgh 1 - Leafs dominate 3rd to beat Pittsburgh

Over the last few seasons, Toronto's strong performance against Pittsburgh has always stood out to me. Despite the Penguins' relatively consistent high placing in the standings, while the Leafs were not quite so successful, and the presence of two major stars in Crosby and Malkin, the two teams have typically played closely fought game, with little between them. The same rang true on Saturday night.

Through two periods, the Penguins were heavily on top of the game, outchancing Toronto 20-6 overall, and 11-2 at ES. However, the game was tied, as the two teams traded special teams goals in the first, and the Leafs managed to survive the siege in the second.

In the third, the Leafs got an early goal from Nazem Kadri to pull ahead, and then totally shut down a potent Penguins attack, allowing only a single Penguin chance (and that one coming without Crosby or Malkin on). Phil Kessel added a late powerplay goal for insurance to secure the win.

A summary of the scoring chances:

Status Overall ES

1 4 9 0 3
2 2 11 2 8
3 7 1 5 1
Total 13 21 7 12

The Extra Skater game profile.

Another Corsi loss, but narrower this time, 58-64 overall and 41-49 5-on-5.

Some notes:

1st - 13:45 - Martin easily goes around McLaren at the point, and drives in, managing to get a shot on goal, which Reimer stops.
1st - 13:08 - Pittsburgh score on the powerplay, Letang jumping in and getting free, and Malkin throwing a pass to him out front from behind the net.
1st - 3:27 - After an excellent powerplay that saw Pittsburgh generate several chances, Letang tries to keep it in, only to put it right on Phaneuf's stick. The defenseman then threw it up to a breaking Bolland, who fired home a shot from the high slot.

2nd - 14:15 - Kadri, taking Bozak's place on the top line, picks up a loose puck in the neutral zone, and drives in with Kessel and JVR. The Leafs are 3-on-4, but Van Riemsdyk manages to get through the middle, and on the end of Kadri's blocked shot, forcing a great save from Fleury.
2nd - 13:29 - Crosby goes right through Jake Gardiner, putting a solid shot on Reimer, but is turned aside.
2nd - 11:34 - Ranger tries to hold the puck in at the line, but his shot hits Sutter, sending him off on a 2-on-1. Glass gets up with him, but Sutter opts to shoot, with Reimer making the save before getting wiped out by Glass.
2nd - 10:32 - Reimer makes a huge save to keep the game level. Ranger is caught again, this time leaving Vitale and Dupuis on a 2-on-2. However, one of the Leafs back is McLaren, who can't tie up Vitale enough, and Gardiner can't block the pass across. It's up to Reimer, who gets over and robs Dupuis.
2nd - 10:05 - A flurry of Pittsburgh chances. 5-on-5, Crosby somehow slips the defence and manages to get totally alone on the far side, hammering a shot that Reimer stops. Kunitz then deflects Maatta's shot right on, with D'Agostini getting a dig at the rebound.
2nd - 8:11 - Fleury throws up a long pass as the Leafs penalty killers barrel to the bench, allowing Jokinen to play through D'Agostini alone. Reimer gives up a big rebound, but Maatta steers it wide on the backhand.
2nd - 0:42 - Pittsburgh could have let a great period go to total waste, almost getting caught out late. Kunitz pushes up, but doesn't get the puck, leaving Clarkson with the puck on a 3-on-2. He finds Raymond, who opts to shoot, rather than try the pass to Rielly, with Fleury coming up with a good shot.

3rd - 18:34 - Malkin throws a pass into the middle, where a potnetial break is shaping up for D'Agostini. However, it ends up on Van Riemsdyk's stick, and the Leaf top line springs into action. A quick pass exchange between JVR and Rielly leaves Jokinen, who was in decent defensive shape, behind the play, setting up a 3-on-2. When JVR dishes to Kessel, Martin stays with him as he cuts across the slot. With Orpik paying close attention to Kessel and Jokinen caught out, this leaves Kadri wide open in the slot. A nice deke gets Fleury on his stomach and allows Kadri to lift it in for the lead.
3rd - 17:20 - The last Penguin chance of the game. Ranger gets in trouble again, coughing it up to D'Agostini. With three Leafs down low, and no one in front of the net, Adams gets a step on McLaren on the boards, getting free for a good shot when D'Agostini gets him the puck.
3rd - 2:55 - Another spectacular pass from Van Riemsdyk, who has a chance in close rejected, then manages to get the puck a cross to a wide-open Kessel as he falls to the ice.

The top line had a solid game without Bozak, with JVR a +2, though Kessel was a -2, on for 6 chances against, the highest of any forward. The Bolland line kept its head above water by staying even. McClaren, Smith and Bodie were all not nearly good enough, each on for at least three chances in less than four minutes.

Morgan Rielly had a solid game, with his +3 tied for a team high. He shared it with his partner, Franson, who had a similar total. Rielly was also on for a team high 5 chances for, in one of his strongest games of the season. While things went well for that pairing, Gardiner and Ranger had a disaster, not on for a single chance for, and on for 6 (Gardiner), and 7 (Ranger) against.

The two big stars, Crosby and Malkin, weren't overly effective; Malkin was a -2, and Crosby produced four chances in 19 minutes, not a particularly impressive number.
