Game 14 - Leafs 4, Calgary 2 - Leafs outshot but chances don't track with it in Leaf win

Toronto completed a sweep of Alberta, with a 4-2 win in Calgary, in yet another game that saw the Leafs handily out shot, and behind in chances for much of it. However, the chance numbers, presented below, don't make it look nearly as bad as the shot and Corsi results do.

Despite being handily outshot, the two sides were relatively even in chances throughout the game. Toronto were level at even strength after one, but led by two, after Lupul opened the scoring and JVR scored a killer shorthanded marker in the last five seconds of the period.

Calgary made a strong push in the second, Stajan pulling one back late, and recording 6 chances and 20 shots. Toronto recovered in the third, playing excellent defense, allowing only two chances against. They did give up a goal to David Jones, but had re-established a two goal lead at that point, through Mason Raymond.Calgary didn't generate a chance after the Jones goal, which was their only chance in the last 18 minutes, a very strong performance to hold on for victory.

A summary of the scoring chances:

1 6 8 5 5
2 3 7 3 6

The Extra Skater game profile.

Another substantial Corsi loss for the Leafs, 74-43 overall, 59-40 5-on-5, and 25-13 in 5-on-5 Corsi close.

Some notes:

1st - 18:42 - Ranger and McClement get caught out, as Glencross is able to thread a pass past both his marker and Ranger, allowing Jones to take a couple of whacks at the puck from point blank range.
1st - 12:04 - The Leafs take a lead with some good fortune. At the tail end of a powerplay, Gardiner fires a shot high and wide, only to have it bounce off the glass and right in front, where Ramo, moving laterally, is totally out of position. Lupul gets to it, and has his first shot blocked by Butler, but the rebound drops right at Lupul's feet again.
1st - 10:51 - Franson pinches in the Calgary zone, but has the puck chipped past him to Galiardi. Ashton hits Galiardi, but not before the Flame gets a pass up to Colborne, who is 2-on-1 with Brodie against Rielly. Colborne gets the pass through, but Brodie isn't able to deflect it on net.
1st - 9:42 - Ranger seems to have the play under control, with two outlets on either side, but Jones takes him into the boards, and finds Glencross, who is totally alone in front of the net. Gardiner is out of position, having moved beneath the goal line in anticipation of Ranger throwing it around the boards to him.  Bernier makes a good save, probably his best to this point.
1st - 6:53 - Glencross breaks in 2-on-2 with Brodie, but Brodie totally loses his marker Kadri, and is able to deflect Glencross' shot, hitting the crossbar.
1st - 3:23 - Kessel shows off his hands, dancing around Wideman from a standing start, but doesn't get a lot on the shot to trouble Ramo.
1st - 0:04 - A shorthanded goal in the last five seconds of a period is about as demoralizing a goal as you can give up, and was brutal for Calgary's chances. A very comfortable rush by McClement and JVR should be totally under control, but McClement slips a pass by two defenders, and Van Riemsdyk's shot, which wasn't particularly venomous, finds its way past Ramo.

2nd - 17:40 - A bit of a bad change, and some weak positioning, leaves Calgary with a 3-on-2 out of nothing. Monahan throws a pass in Baertschi feet that slows him up, and could very well have scuppered the chance, but he manages an incredible backhand pass, threading it through four Leafs to find Hudler in front. Bernier is there to stop Hudler's chance in close, though. It's almost a bit of a shame, even as a Leaf fan, because that was a beautiful pass.
2nd - 17:07 - Another 3-on-2, as Gardiner pinches up and doesn't get the puck. Van Riemsdyk gets back well enough to prevent a 2-on-1, but Gardiner can't catch the trailer, Brodie. Stajan goes wide, and with Jones covered, finds the cutting Brodie, forcing another good Bernier save.
2nd - 8:06 - The first sign of Leaf life in the period sees a 2-on-1 develop through JVR's footspeed; Butler gets partially caught out by a good pass from Kessel to Kadri, but is level with Van Riemsdyk at the red line, only to get left in the dust. Kadri stops up and easily gets the pass by Russell, but Van Riemsdyk can't put it on the net with Ramo down.
2nd - 2:57 - After almost 7 full periods of shutout hockey, the Leafs give up a goal. Glencross takes the puck into the corner after a won faceoff, and Stajan ends up being given too much space; Gunnarson is coming towards Glencross, and Lupul is too far behind Stajan, with Kadri caught out along the wall. Stajan doesn't have a lot of space, but makes it count against his old team.
2nd - 0:43 - With three Calgary defensemen in his vicinity, Kessel still finds a way to get loose, connecting with JVR's pass into the slot and firing a quick shot right on Ramo.

3rd - 18:29 - Toronto win a draw in the Calgary zone, but then immediately give up a chance against. McClement's pass back goes by Rielly, and Monahan speeds past his fellow rookie, creating a sudden break. Franson gets back, but his sliding attempt to block a pass goes a bit awry; maybe it was succesful in enough in discouraging the pass, as Monahan ends up shooting, and Bernier turns him aside.
3rd - 14:01 - Very sloppy play from Brodie, who tries to stickhandle through Clarkson at the red line, and gets the puck easily stolen. This sets up an odd-man break, with Raymond just ahead of his man. Clarkson drags the puck to get around a sliding Butler and fires off a dangerous shot from the slot. Ramo stops it, but Raymond goes to the net, and is right there from the rebound. Great work by Clarkson to create the goal.
3rd - 5:21 - A shot from the blue line is deflected in, Jones getting a piece of Russell's shot. The Leafs probably should have had it out along the boards earlier in the shift, but a shot deflecting off a man in front is some relatively poor luck. Not that the Leafs aren't due for a little of that.

An excellent game for Nazem Kadri, even if he didn't generate a lot of direct chances. He was on for a team-high 8 ES chances, and was tied for a team-best +3. David Clarkson shared that team best, on for only a single chance against in 15 even strength minutes. Mason Raymond, ave Bolland and Phil Kessel were also solid. Jay McClement, used in his typical defensive role, had a terrible night in chances, on for six against with being on for a single Leaf opportunity.

Jake Gardiner had a solid night, the best on the Leaf defense at +2. Dion Phaneuf and Gunnarson  were both -1, while Morgan Rielly had a solid night as well. Cody Franson was, again, the lowest Leaf defenseman, though at a decent -2.

Brodie seemed to be all over the ice in terms of chances, both good and bad, on for 9 and putting up a +2. Curtis Glencross was the best in terms of net for the Flames, while Stajan and jones were also solid,. No Flame in particular struggled, with the weakest Colborne and Galiardi at -2.

Players with nice chance numbers:
Toronto - Nazem Kadri, David Clarkson
Calgary - TJ Brodie, Curtis Glencross, Matt Stajan

Players with poor chance numbers:
Toronto - Jay McClement, Joffrey Lupul
Calgary - Joe Colborne, TJ Galiardi
