Game 16 - Leafs 2, New Jersey 1 (SO) - Magic from Kessel saves a lackluster Leafs team

After a long week without Leafs hockey, Toronto got back into action with a home game that served as both their Remembrance Day game and the yearly Hall of Fame game. The opponents were New Jersey, who have struggled to score goals this season, something that wouldn't change in this game.

A dull first period didn't see many chances for either side, despite a lot of Toronto powerplay time, including a double minor to Tedenby and a decent stretch of 5-on-3 for the Leafs. The second period was more lively, as New Jersey dominated, outside of a good Leafs outing on the power play. Jonathan Bernier was excellent, turning aside 10 Jersey chances in the period.

In the third, it was again Toronto's powerplay that was key, as it generated three of the four chances they managed, including the opening goal, a gorgeous solo rush from Phil Kessel that will get replayed on lot of highlight shows. New Jersey responded with 3 chances of their own, but their goal actually wasn't a chance, Bernier managing to deflect a harmless looking shot up and over his own shoulder to tie the game.

Toronto had a couple of good chances in the extra frame, forcing a great save out of Schneider on a 3-on-1, and was able to get the win in the shootout, where New Jersey's has an abysmal record, yet to score this year.

Toronto being heavily outchanced at even strength continues a pattern, but a good powerplay effort was able to save them in this one.

The Extra Skater game profile.

The Leafs were doubled up at 5-on-5, losing 24-50 in Corsi, but were at least closer overall, thanks to those powerplays, 52-60.

Some notes:

1st - 16:43 - Jagr gives the puck away while trying to skate out of his zone, and it floats into the center of the neutral zone, where David Clarkson is able to puck it up. Gelinas and Zidlicky are both caught on the far side of the ice, allowing Clarkson to get in and put a good shot on; Schneider loses track of the rebound, but Zidlicky gets back to swat away Clarkson's open net chance.

1st - 14:15 - Great work from Kadri on the boards, slipping away from two defenders, and drawing the attention of a third. This leaves Clarkson wide open and unmarked, cruising down the slot, but his shot is stopped by Schneider.

2nd - 18:12 - An attempted cross-zone pass by Kessel lands on Ryder's stick, and with Gardiner in the midst of jumping up on the far side, it leads to a 2-on-1 for Ryder and Zajac. Gardiner shows some good skating to get back with Zajac, but doesn't keep tight enough to him, letting him go to get a shot off on Bernier.

2nd - 15:09 - Raymond catches out the Jersey defenders, getting in behind Larsson and picking up a long pass from Kadri to go in alone. Schneider makes a good save.

2nd - 14:37 - An ill-timed Leaf change, with Kadri and Raymond both heading to the bench, generates a 3-on-2 out of nothing for the Devils. Ranger then moves up to pressure Zajac; I've gotta assume he thinks he has cover, given how he abandons his position. He can't block the pass, and Brunner and Bernier are no in on a clear 2-on-1. Bernier gets the pass across, but Brunner's shot from in close is high and wide.

2nd - 11:46 - A powerplay chance from Kadri, who is well covered coming into the zone, but makes a great move around Volchenkov to set up a 2-on-1 with Clarkson. He cuts in front, rather than rying to pass to Clarkson, and has his backhander stopped.

2nd - 5:49 - Kessel tries to stickhandle in, but coughs it up, catching out Ranger, who had driven to the net, and Lupul, who was covering for him, but then jumped up himself. This springs Loktionov with Zubrus, who puts a shot on, but not much of a dangerous one.

3rd - 15:06 - Not a dangerous looking rush from New Jersey, but Carter is able to chip it around Gardiner to Gionta, then drive past the Leaf defender to the net. Rielly gets down, but isn't able to block the pass across, which finds Carter all alone in front. Bernier's able to make the stop, though.

3rd - 11:49 - A spectacular individual goal from Kessel on the powerplay. After a Devils clearance only makes it to center ice, Franson finds Kessel. He circles all the way back through the Leaf zone, then turns up ice, shadowed by Gionta all the way. He easily gets free from the Jersey marker by the red line, and with Zidlicky a bit too much to the boards side, Kessel sees an open hole and drives right through it. Zidlicky hooks him, and gets him partially turned around, but not enough to stop him snapping a shot through Schneider's 5-hole. An incredible individual goal, one of the best I've ssen in the league this year.

3rd - 4:45 - Not a chance, but a terrible goal against for the Leafs, as Bernier, who had been so solid, fluffs an easy one. Ryder throws a soft shot on net, seemingly to try and get a rebound, only to have it ramp up Bernier's stick and over his shoulder to tie the game. If the game had ended up in a Leaf loss, there'd be a lot more criticism on this one, as it is, it'll be largely forgotten. I can't help but wonder if Reimer would get that much of the benefit of the doubt.

OT - 1:44 - Toronto totally bossed the overtime period in terms of chances, no better than this one. Zajac can't get much on Jagr's centering pass, and JVR takes it away to break loose with Kessel. Phaneuf jumps up to make it a 3-on-1 against Gelinas. The three Leafs exchange passes to set up a perfect chance, Kessel alone on the far side, but Schneider does well to get down and across to stop it.

JVR moving to centre Kessel and Lupul was the story, but for the most part that line wasn't great, generating chances on the powerplay, but not doing well at even strength. In particular, Lupul really struggled, not on for a single chance for and for a team worst 7 against. The line that played well was Kadri's, as he, Clarkson and Raymond were the only Leaf forwards to be positive. The checking line also struggled, with Kulemin, Bodie and McClement not on for a chance for, and all at least four against.

Dressing 7 defensemen changed up the pairing somehwat, to the benefit of Franson, who posted a postive net for the first time in almost two weeks. Dion Phaneuf had a tough night at -4, as did Paul Ranger, while Morgan Rielly, who didn't play much, had a solid night, on for just one chance against.

Jagr was excellent, on for a game-high ten chances, and a solid +6, level with Loktionov as the game's best. Dainius Zubrus was also good, as was Adam Larsson. The only real strugglers for the Devils were Adam Henrique, and the goal scorer, Michael Ryder, the only two negatives on the team.

Players with nice chance numbers:
Toronto - Mason Raymond, David Clarkson
New Jersey - Jaromir Jagr, Andrei Loktionov, Dainius Zubrus

Players with poor chance numbers:
Toronto - Joffrey Lupul, Nikolai Kulemin, Jay McClement
New Jersey - Adam Henrique, Michael Ryder
