Game 18 - Minnesota 2, Leafs 1 (SO) - Leafs blow lead in third period, Kadri suspended

Toronto completed its season series with the Wild, as they headed to Minnesota. The last game with the Wild saw Toronto get badly outchanced, Minnesota call on Josh Harding from the bench, and the Leafs pulling out a win. The return trip saw the first two parts the same, but Toronto weren't able to finish off the third, blowing a late lead and falling in the shootout, despite some excellent penalty killing.

The first period was a relatively even contest, with both sides having some powerplay opportunites, but not generating a lot at even strength. After that, though, the ice started to tilt Minnesota's way. They dominated the second at even strength, and Toronto was extraordinarily fortunate to have the lead after two periods.

The third period was again a struggle; with Minnesota generating some early chances on the powerplay, then getting a 5-minute stretch of man-advantage when Nazem Kadri was ejected. Toronto's PK was excellent for that time, allowing just one chance in the five minutes, but the Leafs gave up a goal in the last five minutes, Kessel giving the puck away, then having it deflect in off his skate. Minnesota looked like they might seize the win, generating a lot of pressure in the closing minutes, but Toronto held on for overtime. The Leafs have been good in extra sessions this year, and that didn't change in this game, as they came close through Rielly before losing out in the shootout.

Toronto's abysmal second period left them well behind in ES chances, while the amount of penalties they took helped to boost Minnesota's overall advantage.

The Extra Skater game profile.

The Leafs were really badly crushed by Minnesota in Corsi, 43-70 overall, 24-54 5-on-5 and an abysmal 14-46 5-on-5 close.

Some notes:

1st - 7:41 - Pominville comes in on the wing, closely watched by a couple of defenders. He manages to get a pass through to Niederreiter, but Ranger had him tied up well enough to keep him from getting a good chance. The puck is moved back to the line, and Brodin gets it to Pominville for a shot that he sends wide.

2nd - 19:43 - Gardiner takes the puck away from Brodziak on the wall, but can't corral the puck, letting it loose into the slot for Fontaine, who fires wide from in close.

2nd - 15:23 - Gardiner's clearance attempt only gets as far as Brodziak, who has an open lane to find Fontaine out front, as Raymond's attempt to block it doesn't work. He has to take the puck onto his backhand, and doesn't get a great shot off.

2nd - 12:28 - Toronto gets the opening goal on the powerplay. It's a pretty simple powerplay setup, with Gardiner keeping it in at the line after a faceoff, though the call is a tight one. Rielly gets a good shot on and Raymond goes right to the net to put home the rebound.

2nd - 10:25 - Kadri loses out to Parise on the far side, and Lupul isn't able to prevent him getting a pass through to Koivu. Phaneuf pushes up on Koivu, but he manages to chip a pass to Suter to send him in 2-on-1 against Gunnarson. He opts to shoot, and Bernier stops him.

2nd - 9:44 - With Granlund out wide, Gardiner doesn't manage to tie up Heatley all the way in front, and he gets an in-close shot on Bernier.

2nd - 3:01 - Minnesota wins a face-off, but Kessel strips Scandella of the puck and breaks in alone, putting the shot wide.

3rd - 16:04 - Spurgeon throws the puck in front, where it bounces around between four Leaf defenders, eventually coming through to the far side of the net, where Spurgeon, having circled the goal, picks it up. Bernier does a great job to get over and make the stop

3rd - 4:17 - After allowing only one chance on the five minute Kadri penalty, Toronto give up the lead at even strength. Kessel looks set to carry the puck out of the Leaf zone, but his pass for JVR ends up on Koivu's stick instead. He finds Coyle, who throws it in front. Parise isn't able to get his stick on it, so it's not a chance, as it bounces of his skate, then off Kessel

3rd - 3:21 - Toronto wilt in the aftermath of the goal, giving Minnesota a load of chances, including a couple from Niederreiter. He gets off a shot from behind his back on his stomach, but sends it just wide of the post.

3rd - 2:52 - Clarkson's missed shot is corralled by Fontaine; there's a chance for him to get it up to Brodziak, but he skates it up the ice instead. Cooke races in as the third man, outpacing McClement. Clarkson slides to block a potential Cooke shot, but he dishes it to Brodziak at the top of the circle. McClement, racing back hard, goes past Brodizak as he cuts inside. The shot is on, but Bernier stops it.

OT - 0:31 - Rielly almost gives Toronto a win in the last minute of overtime, as he jumps up with Lupul. Rielly skates through the middle, past both potential markers, and manages to deflect Lupul's pass on goal.

Only one regular Leaf forward was a net positive in chances in Minnesota, as Van Riemsdyk did well; Kessel was solid, given how badly the Leafs were blown out, at -1. After a couple of good games, Clarkson had a really poor one, at -5. Smithson also was poor at -4, and they were the only two Leafs not on for a chance for. Kulemin's -6 was a team-low for forwards, and Lupul was also a -5.

Jake Gardiner struggled in his homecoming, also a team-low -6, and Phaneuf and Franson also had poor games. The strongest defender was Morgan Rielly, the only Leaf defender not to be on for a single chance against all night, though in limited playing time.

Suter, on for a staggering 23 minutes of even strength, and 36 overall, was a game and team high +7. Jonas Brodin, who seems to not get nearly the hype he deserves as a 20 year old, was also excellent in a lot of ice time. Jason Pominville was a +6, and Nino Niederreiter was a +5. The only Wild players below 0 were Dany Heatley, who had a couple of good chances he couldn't bury, and Torrey Mitchell.

Players with nice chance numbers:
Toronto - Morgan Rielly
Minnesota - Ryan Suter, Jason Pominville, Jonas Brodin

Players with poor chance numbers:
Toronto - Nikolai Kulemin, Jake Gardiner, David Clarkson
Minnesota - Torrey Mitchell
