Game 55 - Leafs 3, Tampa Bay 2 - Toronto wins with strong 3rd period performance

Through two periods, the Leafs were fortunate to be in the game against the Lightning, well down in chances but level on the scoreboard. They managed something relatively rare in this game, though, dominating the third to earn a victory with a late goal from JVR.

The first was fairly cagey, with some early powerplay chances, but not a lot otherwise in an even frame. Things opened up in the second, as Tampa were effective on their powerplays, as well as getting a lot of even strength chances, taking the period 14-6 overall, and 7-4 at ES.

Toronto had a rare strong third period, holding the Lightning to just 3 chances, and eventually getting rewarded with a late goal from JVR. Tampa managed just one chance after falling behind, as the Leafs did well to defend the lead.

The two teams were level on chances at ES, 13-13, with Toronto barely winning close chances, 12-11, and the Leafs won the third period clearly, 7-3.

For a second straight game, the top line did relatively little until producing a winning goal, as they had a very event quiet night by their standards. The line that was strong was Kadri with Kulemin and Lupul, with the latter pair leading the forwards at +2. Jay McClement was the worst of the forwards at -3, and Mason Raymond struggled as well, at -2.

Another strong game from the young defensemen, with Gardiner leading the team at +4, and Rielly +2. Cody Franson had a game-worst -4, on for 7 Tampa chances at ES, and 13 overall. Tim Gleason got beat-up quite a bit over the course of the night, but ended up even.

While there was a lot of talk about non-Olympian Marty St. Louis, who was solid, the most impressive Lightning player was an Olympic bound one, Czech Ondrej Palat, on for nine Tampa chances. Mark Barberio was also very good up front. No really poor games from the Lightning, but Hedman and Filppula weren't particularly impressive at ES, and Ryan Malone did little in his ten minutes.

Players with nice chance numbers:
Toronto - Jake Gardiner, Nikolai Kulemin, Joffrey Lupul
Tampa Bay - Ondrej Palat, Mark Barberio, Martin St. Louis

Players with poor chance numbers:
Toronto - Cody Franson, Jay McClement, Mason Raymond
Tampa Bay - Ryan Malone, Radko Gudas, Valtteri Filppula
