Another poor start left the Leafs chasing, down by one after less than five minutes, and giving up four of the first five chances. They got level in the first by the end of the frame, but couldn't score. Another poor start in the second left them further behind, first due to a Panther powerplay, then a good shift from the Bergenheim line leading to a goal just short of the six minute mark.
Toronto managed to win the third period in chances, but with the Panthers sitting back to defend a lead, that's hardly surprising. A goal from Raymond early in the period left the Leafs with some hope of chasing down the victory, but they weren't able to score again, despite generating seven of the last eight chances.
Florida's lead through two periods was chased down by Toronto in the third, but, as mentioned, the Leafs' five third period ES chances only resulted in one goal.

Only one forward really stood out either way, as Clarkson was a game-worst -4 in his return from suspension. Peter Holland was the only other negative Leafs forward. Kulemin and McClement continued their recent run of strong play, both +2. The big line did generate the most chances for Toronto, and were all slight positives.
Morgan Rielly is now certain to stay in Toronto, rather than to heading with Sweden with the World Junior team, on the back of another solid performance, as he was one of the top defensemen at +2. Also there were Carl Gunnarsson and the much maligned Mark Fraser. Jake Gardiner, who was benched for a chunk of the second, and played his least number of minutes in almost twenty games (since the game @ Minnesota), was a -2, as was Cody Franson.

Barkov, Boyes and Bergenheim, who generated two of the Panthers' goals, were all very good, while many of the Florida forwards were in the negative. Weaver and Kulikov were the best of the defenders. Gudbranson was the lowest of the the Panthers at -3, while Upshall and Bjugstad were among those not on the ice for a chance for.
