The Leafs substantial chance deficit in the first mostly came down to a couple of bad shifts that saw Boston generate multiple chances, with the Bruins' goal coming on the powerplay. The second saw a strong response from the Leafs, as they pulled the game even on ES chances, as well as getting a goal which wasn't a chance; Lupul roofed a shot from just outside the scoring chance area. However, a late double minor against JVR left the Leafs killing a penalty across the intermission, and they'd pay in the third, Bergeron scoring to put the Bruins ahead.
After that, Boston were able to successfully kill off the game, allowing just a single ES chance against the rest of the way. The Leafs did get some chances on a powerplay with ten minutes left, but Boston's D totally shut down the game after that, with the last scoring chance for either team coming with 9:45 left.
That shutdown in the third prevented a possible Leafs comeback, and saw them lose the scoring chance battle again, by 6 overall and 4 at even strength.

The Extra Skater game profile.
A close Corsi game for Toronto, for once, losing 58-67 overall, 41-51 5-on-5, and actually winning 5-on-5 close, 37-36.
Some notes:
1st - 18:28 - A quick break for the Bruins, as Ashton's clearing attempt is stymied right outside the Toronto blue line. Smith throws a nice backhand pass to Kelly, who finds Soderberg on the outside. His shot beats rimer, but hits the post.
1st - 14:42 - Some defensive miscommunication leads to a couple of Boston chances. Gunnarsson and Raymond both follow Lucic to the net, leaving Krug all alone in front. Reimer stops him after Iginla gets a pass to him. After the puck ends up in the corner, Iginla manages to come away with it, goes right through Kadri, and gets another shot on from in close.
1st - 6:23 - That dominant Boston shift, precipitated by Ranger dropping his stick, leaving Kulemin to give his away. Krejci, Lucic and Iginla are then able to control the puck to their heart's content. This results in three chances for Boston. The Leafs manage to hold out for almost a minute without any real chance at net, but Hamilton makes a couple of nice moves around the stickless Kulemin and the sticked McClement, then dishes for Krejci, who shoots wide. Krejci then sets up Iginla, with Ranger unable to cut off his pass from behind the net, and McClement losing position on him. The third chance comes when Chara jumps down into the play; Lucic finds him from across the ice, with a open passing lane as the three Leafs forwards are all caught too high, but Boston miss the net again.
1st - 4:33 - The above shift provides another benefit to the Bruins, as they open the scoring on the powerplay that ensued when McClement took a penalty to finally end the Bruins' domination. Reimer is able to stop Iginla in close, but Chara is way too much for Gunnarsson and Phaneuf to handle in front, and taps it in from close range.
1st - 3:46 - Toronto's first good chance of the night comes when Kessel chips the puck past a pinching Seidenberg. This sends Lupul off 1-on-1 with McQuaid, and Jake Gardiner shows some good speed to beat the backchecking Bruins and get a point-blank chance in front that Rask stops.
2nd - 12:56 - Some end-to-end action, as Toronto enter the stretch that saw them start to seize back some control in the game. Phaneuf finds Kessel coming down the wing, and he easily outpaces both Bruin defenders to get a decent shot off on Rask that's stopped. However, after Kessel coralls the rebound and tries to throw it up the boards, Phaneuf slips, leaving Lucic breaking with Iginla on Gunnarsson. Lucic opts to shoot, and rings it off the post.
2nd - 5:00 - Kadri, Kessel and Lupul create a strong shift, with the chances coming from Kessel, first putting wide after coming out from behind the net, then deflecting a Phaneuf shot onto the post.
2nd - 3:08 - A great rush from Lupul, flying into the Boston zone 1-on-2, but going wide on Seidenberg and snapping a shot into the top of the net to tie the game. He's outside the scoring chance area, but it's still a top quality goal.
2nd - 1:45 - Kessel coughs it up to Chara in the neutral zone, leaving Boston coming in 4-on-2 against Ranger and Fraser. Kelly finds Smith, the trailer, who moves around a sprawling Fraser, but has his shot stopped by Reimer.
3rd - 18:54 - Boston reclaim the lead on the powerplay. Reimer makes a stop on Smith from the point, but gives up a rebound to Soderberg. He sprawls to stop that too, but is stuck on the ice, with Ranger on top of him, as Bergeron gets to the loose puck and puts it in the wide open net.
3rd - 16:22 - Krejci strips Kadri as he tries to carry it out of the Leafs zone, catching the Leafs out somewhat. Lucic is watched by Fraser, but Phaneuf is a step behind Iginla from the blue line in, and Lucic's pass finds him alone in front, forcing another good save from Reimer.
3rd - 10:59 - Toronto's last flurry of chances come on the powerplay. Kessel cuts in after rushing 1-on-4, but has it stopped. He recovers the rebound and throws it out front to Gardiner, who has his shot stopped. The rebound falls to Kessel, but Rask is there again to stop his chance.
3rd - 9:45 - Marchand, coming in alone shorthanded, has the puck bounce away from him, and circles the net with Franson in pursuit, the chance seemingly nullified. However, he then cuts out into the slot, shrugging off Franson's attempt to shove him over, and gets a good point blank shot off on Reimer.

Lupul and Kadri where the only real bright spots of the Leafs forwrads, as along with Clarkson they were the only players to have positive net chances on the team. Kulemin and McClement had team low -4's, partially due to being members of the five man unit caught out for that long powerplay-like shift. Even they were both on for three chances for, though, as the Leafs didn't have any lines that had total disasters on the night.
Jake Gardiner led the defense in net chances, at an even 0. Fraser and Franson were -1, as was Ranger. In fact, for all the heat he gets, other than that shift, he was only on for two chances against all game, and only one at even strength. Not impressive, but not as bad as it might seem.

Iginla looked a player in his prime, on for 8 chances for, but he was far from the most impressive of the Bruins. Lucic was dangerous with a game high +5, and Kelly was not on for a single chance against at even strength. on the defense, Chara was a good +4, and Krug also avoided being on for a chance against. The only stragglers for Boston were Louis Eriksson, who got a point on the empty netter, but was a -2 otherwise, and Johnny Boychuk, a -2 in a team #2 22 minutes of ES ice time.
Players with nice chance numbers:
Toronto - Joffrey Lupul, Nazem Kadri
Boston - Milan Lucic, Chris Kelly, Zdeno Chara
Players with poor chance numbers:
Toronto - Nikolai Kulemin, Jay McClement
Boston - Loui Eriksson, Johnny Boychuk
