Game 1 - MTL 4, TOR 3 - Late goal sinks Leafs in season opener

So begins a new season! A link to the concepts behind tracking scoring chances is here.

The first game of the new season saw the Leafs lose, as a pair of fluke goals late in the third period saw Toronto get level, then fall behind again in the course of the last three minutes.

The Leafs were outchanced 19-14 at ES, but the real concern came at ES close, where they were crushed 18-9, and an embarrassing 7-1 in the 3rd period.

David Clarkson is the surprise leader, as he, along with Komarov and Santorelli, formed a very effective line, including generating a goal (though not one from a scoring chance). Gardiner was the only player outside that line that ended up as a positive player at even strength.

The top line struggled, on for a lot of chances against without answering much; Bozak and JVR were a team worst -6 at ES close. It's interesting to see the balance of the lines, with Frattin the lowest ESTOI player, but still getting over nine minutes. Holland had a solid game, the best of the forwards outside that 'third' line. Kozun had some good moments with his speed, but his overall number wasn't great, and Winnik also wasn't strong.

Phaneuf and Robidas struggled as a pairing, with the Leaf captain getting blown by for one of the goals. Rielly, Percy and Gardiner, the young guys, were all -2, which on this night wasn't bad.

Desharnais, Pacioretty and Parenteau generated a lot of chances, and Subban grabbed a key goal to go with his strong game. New arrival Gilbert wasn't great, and Bourque, Sekac and Eller were the worst of Montreal's lines.

There are few things less valuable than a chart like this after a single game, but that top line's ES close% is miserable.
